Art Basel Paris Closes Early Amid Protests, Disrupting African Galleries participating in Paris Art Week
Art Basel Paris has announced the cancellation of its final two public days, 24 and 25 October, as demonstrations and heightened security concerns disrupt the French capital. The decision threatens an important commercial weekend for international exhibitors, including African galleries Stevenson, Goodman Gallery and Galerie Cécile Fakhoury, while raising questions about the impact on the concurrent AKAA art fair.

Art Basel Paris 2026 will close to the public on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October,
bringing an unexpected early end to one of the international art market's most important gatherings.
In an announcement communicated to visitors, organisers confirmed that the fair would remain open on Friday 23 October, with admission permitted until 7pm. Visitors have been instructed to bring government-issued identification, while those holding tickets for the cancelled weekend dates will be contacted directly.
The decision comes amid escalating demonstrations, student mobilisation and heightened security measures across Paris. The unrest has already disrupted several cultural institutions and events, exposing the vulnerability of the city's art infrastructure during one of its busiest commercial weeks.
Art Basel has emphasised that the protection of visitors, exhibitors, staff and artworks remains its highest priority. Security arrangements include additional personnel, continuous perimeter patrols, metal detectors and bag inspections, coordinated with the Paris Police Prefecture. The closure represents a significant interruption to the fifth edition of Art Basel Paris, which had assembled 211 galleries from 41 countries and territories at the Grand Palais under the direction of Karim Crippa.
The developments also cast uncertainty over AKAA - Also Known As Africa, which is scheduled to take place from 23 to 25 October at the Carreau du Temple. Now in its eleventh edition, AKAA has established itself as an important European platform for contemporary African and Afro-descendant art, bringing together galleries, collectors, curators and artists from across Africa and its diaspora.
Unlike Art Basel Paris, AKAA has not announced a corresponding cancellation in the official information reviewed by Artweb Africa as of 22 October. Its published schedule continues to list Friday through Sunday, although the evolving security situation makes it essential for visitors and exhibitors to check for further announcements. The location of AKAA at the Carreau du Temple, in Paris's third arrondissement, also deserves attention. The venue is close to Place de la République, an area associated with recent demonstrations and temporary restrictions.
Editorial verification note: The closure dates and visitor instructions are based on the Art Basel announcement supplied to Artweb Africa. At the time of research, the fair's publicly indexed visitor-information page still displayed its original 23–25 October schedule. The direct causal link between the weekend cancellation and a specific protest action has not been independently established by the fair's quoted statement. The discussion of financial effects is analysis, not confirmed losses or statements from individual galleries. No AKAA closure has been confirmed.
